Home HardeningEmber-Resistant Vents

Ember-Resistant Vent Retrofit

Portola Valley, CA

A wooded Portola Valley home had ten exterior vents screened only with quarter-inch galvanized hardware cloth, openings large enough to let wind-driven embers into the attic and crawlspace. We retrofitted all ten openings with noncombustible, corrosion-resistant stainless steel mesh at a nominal one-eighth-inch opening, installed behind the existing screens, mechanically fastened with stainless hardware, and perimeter sealed with fire-rated caulking and fire-blocking foam. The work meets California's Safer From Wildfires ember-resistant vent standards and is backed by a two-year workmanship warranty.

FAQ

Common Questions

Did roof sprinklers save homes in recent California wildfires?

In documented wildfire events, homes equipped with exterior sprinkler systems combined with defensible space and home hardening have shown dramatically higher survival rates. During the 2007 Ham Lake Fire, all 188 properties with that combination survived. This data comes from independent sources and is not claimed as FireRoofs-specific results.

How many wildfire defense systems has FireRoofs installed?

FireRoofs has designed and coordinated systems across the Bay Area, with active systems protecting homes in Saratoga, Los Gatos, Los Altos Hills, Woodside, and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Every system is designed for the property's terrain, water supply, and risk profile.

How long does installation take?

FireRoofs designs and coordinates each system with vetted, licensed and insured partner contractors. Timelines are property-specific. Every system is commissioned and tested before handoff.
