Lafayette Wildfire Defense
Lafayette sits in a valley ringed by oak-covered hills and open space, with Briones Regional Park to the north and the Lafayette Ridge trail system wrapping the town. Neighborhoods along Reliez Valley Road, Happy Valley, and the Burton Valley hillsides back directly onto grassland and oak woodland that cure to tinder by late summer. The Caldecott corridor to the west channels the same terrain that produced the 1991 East Bay Hills firestorm just a few ridgelines away, and Diablo wind events regularly push warm, dry air across the community.

Common Questions
What wildfire risk does Lafayette face?
Lafayette is designated a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone by CAL FIRE. Contra Costa County fire maps confirm extreme exposure driven by annual grassland and coast live oak woodland fuel loads and dry-season wind patterns. Homes along Reliez Valley, Happy Valley, and Burton Valley back onto cured grassland and oak woodland with minimal separation from structures.
How does FireRoofs protect Lafayette homes from wildfire?
FireRoofs provides both active defense and passive home hardening for Lafayette properties. Active defense includes automated exterior sprinkler systems with dual detection, satellite monitoring, and cameras with intelligent fire detection and sensors. Passive hardening covers ember-resistant vent retrofits, noncombustible fencing, Zone Zero landscape hardening, and exterior cladding upgrades. Every upgrade is captured in one evidence packet documented against the Safer from Wildfires categories the project touches.
What does home hardening include for a Lafayette property?
Home hardening for Lafayette properties addresses every ember entry point on the structure. FireRoofs performs ember-resistant vent installation, noncombustible fencing replacement, eave and soffit sealing, Zone Zero landscape clearance within 5 feet of the structure, and exterior cladding upgrades where needed. What is California home hardening?
California home hardening is the process of retrofitting a structure to resist wildfire ember intrusion and radiant heat exposure. It includes replacing combustible building materials, sealing openings such as attic vents and eaves, installing noncombustible fencing, clearing the Zone Zero perimeter within 5 feet of the structure, and applying fire-resistant treatments. Home hardening is one of the 12 mitigation categories under California Regulation 2644.9 (Safer from Wildfires) that participating insurers must recognize when setting premiums.
How do I get off the California FAIR Plan?
To transition from the California FAIR Plan back to the voluntary insurance market, homeowners need to demonstrate documented wildfire risk reduction. This includes property-level mitigation such as home hardening, automated exterior sprinkler systems, and defensible space maintenance. Under California Regulation 2644.9, admitted insurers are required to offer premium discounts for documented mitigation across 12 categories. FireRoofs provides the upgrades and the evidence packet that documents each improvement for your insurer or broker.
What are the Safer from Wildfires mitigation categories?
The Safer from Wildfires mitigation factors are defined in 10 CCR Section 2644.9(d)(1): (1) Fire Risk Reduction Community listed by the Board of Forestry, (2) Firewise USA Site in Good Standing, (3) clearing of vegetation and debris from under decks, (4) clearing of vegetation, debris, mulch, stored combustibles and movable combustible objects within 5 feet of the building, (5) only noncombustible materials, including fences and gates, within 5 feet of the building, (6) removal or absence of combustible structures within 30 feet of the building, (7) compliance with PRC 4291 and local defensible space ordinances, (8) Class-A fire-rated roof, (9) enclosed eaves, (10) fire-resistant vents, (11) multipane windows or functional shutters that fully cover the window, and (12) at least 6 inches of noncombustible vertical clearance at the bottom of the exterior wall. See the California Department of Insurance Safer from Wildfires page at insurance.ca.gov for the consumer summary.
Do exterior wildfire sprinklers qualify for an insurance discount?
Exterior sprinklers are not one of the named Safer from Wildfires categories, so no carrier is required to discount for them. What a documented FireRoofs project does is produce carrier-ready evidence for the categories that are named, such as ember-resistant vents, enclosed eaves, defensible space compliance and noncombustible Zone 0 work, and some carriers may consider active defense in underwriting. Discounts vary by carrier.
